People with this condition lack the enzyme lactase, which digests the lactose (milk sugar) in dairy products. Lactase splits lactose into galactose and glucose. If the lactose is not broken down, it will remain in the intestine and ferment; hence, many of the symptoms of lactose intolerance include wind and bloating.
Possible symptoms of lactose intolerance
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach rumbling
- Vomiting
- Feeling sick after food
- Colic like pain
- Unformed stools
These symptoms can occur as early as 15-30 minutes after the lactose-containing meal. There are a number of non-specific symptoms associated with lactose intolerance, such as feeling tired, depressed, lacking in concentration and feeling anxious, which are, of course, quite common complaints. However, digestive symptoms are commonly present and the resultant disturbance in the body’s biochemical processes tend to set up more general symptoms. The test is carried out using a mouth swab taken from inside your cheek.
Once you have received your results, our qualified Nutrition Team will be able to discuss these with you and advise on an appropriate nutritional programme.
