It is also referred to as Intestinal Permeability. Leaky gut is where the intestinal lining becomes inflamed and porous, allowing foreign particles to leak into the bloodstream, which can set up all manner of health conditions. It also means that the lining, which normally acts as a defence barrier, is compromised, making other infections more likely. There are numerous causes of leaky gut, such as parasites, Candida, chronic stress, excess alcohol or drugs, lactose intolerance, poor diet or nutrient deficiencies.
Possible symptoms of leaky gut
- Food allergies/intolerances
- Lower abdominal cramps and pain
- Bloating
- Brain fog
- General digestive upsets
- Recurrent infections
- Multiple chemical sensitivities
- Insomnia
- Migraines
- Anxiety
- Skin rashes
A number of autoimmune diseases are associated with leaky gut, such as rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease, as well as ulcerative colitis, MS, eczema, psoriasis and chronic fatigue syndrome. The leaky gut test looks for a specific enzyme (Alpha-1-antitrypsine) that is not broken down where there is increased gut permeability and therefore it can be detected in the stool.
